How To Discuss Money Issues With Your Partner

Money problems are at the root of loads of arguments between couples. While these problems are sometimes an indication of other underlying issues they are just as often a symptom of misunderstanding each other's financial language.

It is easy to see how discussing money can be difficult when you take into account your financial upbringing. If one person in a relationship grew up in a home where there were lots of money issues they may not feel comfortable talking about money.

On the other hand if one partner grew up in a home that was solvent financially they may see no problem with discussing money issues.

Before you can begin a conversation with your partner about finances the two of you have to understand how each of you feels about discussing money. Let your partner know your comfort level and low them to explain their comfort level to you.

This will save you both a lot of frustration during your financial discussions. If you know that your partner is uncomfortable, instead of holding back information which is easily confused with the former emotion, it will avoid a lot of hurt feelings and misunderstanding.

How To Discuss Money

Set a date - If one of you is upset about how the other has handled your finances it is not fair to go on the attack when they walk in the door from work. Instead, set up a time when both of you are not too tired or stressed when you can sit down, uninterrupted and talk about the situation.

Work as a team - Regardless of who makes a bigger financial contribution to the relationship, once you have merged your finances you have to become a team. If you can work from a place of equality you will be more likely to have a positive financial discussion and share responsibilities equally.

Set up a budget - A lot of people do not like budgets because they think they will hold them back from buying the things they want. In fact, the opposite is true. A budget allows you to plan and save for the items you want to have without putting a financial strain on your relationship. A solid budget takes the guesswork and the arguing out of your finances because it spells out how your money is spent and what you can and cannot afford.

Deal with your emotions - If talking about money is stressful to you, be honest about it. If you have resentment toward your spouse for overspending tell them about it in a calm manner. Burying your emotions about money will only breed resentment and lead to arguments and problems later on in the relationship.

Admit the importance of money in your relationship - Most of us like to say that we do not care about money, but that is almost never true. Money and financial security matter so take the time to admit the role that they play in your relationship. It is OK to admit that having money is important to you.
